It’s that time of year again: we’re in the depths of winter and seem a world away from warm evenings. In January when we arrive home from work it’s already dark, not to mention the cold and wet weather. This is the time we swap our healthy salads for home cooked comfort food.
It’s much easier to snuggle deep into the covers when my alarm goes off, and it’s hard to get up when I know I should. For most of us winter is the time we struggle to maintain motivation, and it is easy to see why.
So, with this in mind, I’ve come up with a few tips to make staying on track a little easier.
First things first, do you have a solid goal? If the answer is no, then make one. It could be you have a wedding or a holiday this summer, whatever it is, it is important to have a goal to strive towards. First tip: make sure you make your goal realistic to YOU!
Embrace the cold
Fresh air and open space is good for the mind. It’s all about layers when working out in the winter: don’t wear heavy bulky gym gear and try to dress for temperatures 10-15 degrees (F) colder than you are going to be running in. The best recommendation for good outdoor clothing is a baselayer. This Vertex Long Sleeve baselayer is just perfect. It’s made from warm, stretchy Merino wool and the Vertex’s half-zip design lets you easily adjust to changing temperatures.
Don’t be so strict on yourself: allow yourself a reward every now and then for the hard work you’ve been putting in. Create a reward system for yourself, it might be a glass of wine or a dessert when out for dinner. Or even better download an app which mean exercise can earn you rewards (does anything sound better?!)
Pact is an app where you can earn money from your success by making a deal with yourself. Put your money on the line and if you achieve your fitness goals you earn money from other users who have not quite made theirs. What a great way to add a financial incentive to your fitness! Make fun a priority
Why not try something different to make your workout fun? Take a break from the running machine and wave goodbye to Zumba (which is so last year). Please make way for Aerial Hoop with Flying Fantastic! The hoops will give you the opportunity to execute dynamic tricks, spins and swings, and the classes are great for building strength, stamina and increasing flexibility. Head down to either Farringdon or Battersea to try out a Flying Fantastic class.
Friends, family and flexibility
Above all, I find that switching things up helps to not get stuck in a workout rut. It could be a new gym class, or a yoga night. Working out with other people also makes the experience more enjoyable, plus they keep you motivated!
Be gentle if you need a little break. Take a couple of days out if you need it, then regain your enthusiasm and keep going.
January is the perfect time of the year to focus on your training and nutrition routine so what are you waiting for? Boost your mood and motivation this winter!
