So it’s coming into summer and we’re well into the swing of holiday season with everyone’s excitement at feverish levels in the Kazoo office! However, much like the planes we travel in, what goes up must come down, right? No one likes coming back from holiday, but towards the end of last month that’s exactly the position I found myself in. Settling back in to a not-so-sunny (read: snowy) London after spending 10 glorious days in the tropical climate of Miami wasn’t the most fun I’ve ever had, but in doing so I did quickly find the best ways to beat the holiday blues and settle back in to reality:
Unpack your stuff – like now!
Whilst jetlag gets to even the best of us, perhaps the worst thing you can do on your return is procrastinate when it comes to unpacking. If you’re like me the chances are that you brought all your favourite clothes with you on holiday, and there’s nothing worse than living out of a suitcase! By simply taking the time to unpack your stuff and get back in to your normal routine, you’ve already won a small battle – You don’t want to be picking crumpled up trousers from a box every morning, right?!
What’s that? You thought this was meant to be the opposite of depressing? Well sure, you’ve got a point there I guess, but detoxing can be a very important part of settling back in to your day to day life depending on how your holiday went! I know when I got back from my last holiday I’d done almost nothing but eat fast food (Miami has fantastic chicken wings FYI), drink alcohol and get far too little sleep. Coming back to some healthy home cooked food, and experiencing the simple pleasures of a bottle of water, vegetables and re-discovering the gym means that I feel great every day – a nice contrast to an overtired mess, no matter how good the scenery was.
Look at your photos
Many of us make the criminal mistake of ignoring our photos after a fantastic holiday – most of the time because it’s just too depressing to look at your happy past self smiling by the pool whilst present you sits at a desk wondering what sandwich to get for lunch. All I can say is don’t do this! Embrace your photos! I can’t count the amount of times I’ve flipped open the gallery on my phone to reminisce on my time away, and whilst I’ve gotten some weird looks on the tube for openly laughing at these I definitely haven’t felt the blues!
Plan fun things to do
Perhaps the best way to get over the holiday blues is to get stuff in the diary you can look forward to. Since getting home I’ve planned everything from nights out and lunches to bike rides and cinema trips – all things that have kept me busy and given me something to look forward to since coming back from Miami. Make sure you see all of your friends so you can share your great experiences with them, as they’ll probably want to know – just try not to rub it in!
Book another holiday
You knew this was going to be here, right? But yes, booking another holiday has got to be the ultimate way to beat the holiday blues! You can’t be depressed about coming back from holiday if you’re already looking forward to your next trip, right? Doing this ensures that the only blues you’ll be experiencing any time soon are by the pool!
So there you have it, five top tips for getting back into the swing of things after a fantastic time away!
