To be fair I’ve never been a bridesmaid before so the old saying doesn’t apply (it doesn’t, don’t say it does, I WILL be a bride!) but I must say my first attempt at the task has been very enlightening. They say the best life experiences teach you something about yourself, and that’s true, I now know there really is no limit to what I’ll do for a free dress.
Being asked to be a bridesmaid was a joy; from the awkward whispers speculating as to who would get the job, through the emotional moment of being asked right up to the triumph of watching lesser mortals cower in the face of my superior friendship*. Even my first month in the role was a bit of a treat, I’d never been to a wedding fair before and it turns out I’m totally up for a day out where strangers force free cake and champagne into my hands at every turn…but then it got complicated.
Having handled the drama of dress shopping (who knew it would be difficult to find a dress to suit four girls ranging between 5’1” and 5’9”, who pretty much cover off every dress size between 6 and 16 depending on how big last night’s dinner was?) we’re currently in the midst of arranging the hen party. Bearing in mind I make a career out of managing events, I am baffled by how unbelievably complicated the whole process is.
It all sounded so easy: take fifteen strangers, find one weekend everyone is free then simply source a location near the sea in mid July exactly equidistant from everyone’s homes, “fun” activities, novelty costumes all for a minimal budget. Add to that managing the expectations of guests who assume their best friend is also invited and stir vigorously! Then make sure you assure the bride that everything is in hand, oh, and don’t forget to have a little cry.
It’ll all be fine, and being able to be there for your friend on her wedding day is truly an honour and something I’m very proud to do but I’m just saying, next time you’re at a wedding just spare a thought for the girls standing there holding the flowers. They might just be there to look pretty on the day but they have earned that spot, and that freebie dress.
*Disclaimer: all of my friends are wonderful people, I just had 10 years of friendship on the rest of them
